    About the Paper Shack

Lisa Schwartz

The book you are about to read is historical fiction. I have included a bibliography
demonstrating the historically correct setting and events that occurred in Litchfield
Nebraska, Sunnyside Utah, and World War II from 1940 to 1945. Living in Utah in 2002, I
was able to drive to Sunnyside and map out the area. I spent one year researching
World War II, the war effort, and life in the United States during this period for
Americans of every race and religion. Many people have asked me if Japanese
Americans helped with the war effort in Sunnyside, Utah. The answer is yes. The Utah
Historical Association and the Western Mining & Railroad Museum in Price, Utah
provided invaluable information on the history of Sunnyside, the diverse culture of the
region, and the coke ovens.

The fiction component of The Paper Shack exists only in the Schumacher characters
and the others they met along the way. I based the Schumacher’s on members of my
extended family. However, 70 to 80% of their actions are completely fictional. I
researched the typical family values and norms of the 1940’s, and added quite a bit
more drama. I mean no disrespect to my ancestors and others who were simply doing
their best to put food on the table and survive the depression, not to mention World
War II. My father, who spent his early childhood in a Sunnyside paper shack during the
War Effort, is now a retired dentist. He granted me numerous interviews and the gift of
creative license in character expansion, especially with Carl and the Schumacher’s. My
grandparents have both passed away; however, the legend of The Paper Shack was
often discussed at family gatherings. I wrote this book in honor of my father and his
family’s triumph over such adversity while maintaining their love for each other. They
all are an inspiration to me, and many others.
